Moving Checklist

Congratulations! You have  found the home of your dreams. Below is a helpful checklist of items to tie up any loose ends before starting life in your new home: Click here for a PDF printable version

Four-Six weeks in Advance:

 1. Movers: Ask your Buyer's Agent for referrals for reputable moving companies. Start interviewing these companies and comparing quotes. If necessary, call the city/town you will be moving to and arrange for a permit for your moving van. It is usually done through the Department of Public Works.

2. Start removing items that you do not wish to move into your new home: Begin evaluating items that you no longer use or that not may fit into your new home.

Two-Four weeks in Advance:

1. Start Cleaning: Focusing first on the areas used less frequently than others. Don’t forget to clean your basement or storage area.

2. Secure a storage space if necessary: A storage space is worth considering if you are downsizing and would like to keep items that will not work in your new home.

3. Contact Insurance companies: Inform all insurers of your move and establish coverage under your new address.

4. Bank Accounts: Ensure your bank has a branch in your new community and fill out any necessary change of address documents.

5. Notify the Department of Motor Vehicle of your move: Apply for a new registration and parking permits if applicable.

6. Credit Cards: Contact all credit cards companies and inform them of your change of address.

7. Cancel memberships and subscriptions: Transfer or cancel all subscriptions including newspaper, magazines, Netflix, etc.

8. Chance of Address: Fill out a change of address form with your local post office. Or complete the form online.

One-Two weeks in Advance:

1. Begin packing your items: Over the next two weeks, fill boxes with items used the least to the most, packing up more and more each day.

2. Contact Utility Companies: Disconnect and transfer service, if possible, to all of your utility companies such as electric, gas, water, telephone, cable, etc. If you are unable to transfer service, contact your new utilities companies to have service connected.

3. Separate items that you would like to move on your own: You may consider moving some items on your own such as jewelry, family heirlooms, prescriptions, etc. You should also get all of your prescriptions refilled prior to moving.

4. Send out a change of address notice to friends and family: Let friends and family know that you are moving. Consider sending out a change of address card or email.

One week in Advance:

1. Schedule a final walk through with your Buyer's Agent: The walk through will allow you a final inspection before closing.

2. Prepare for Closing: Make sure you have all the documents you will need to close, including your driver's license and a second form of ID, your check book, and any certified funds for payment at closing.
